SUCCESS

One important result of implementing the PSAP in the schools has been the decrease in the amount of time it takes a child to tell someone about a sexually abusive situation.

In 1984, the Department Children and Families (DCF), formerly known as SRS, and Reno County law enforcement officers saw close to a 100% increase in confirmed reports of child sexual abuse, and most of that increase in confirmation could be traced back to PSAP presentations in the classrooms. Today, we continue to see much the same results. Children report that after going through the PSAP they feel better prepared to handle the information and have the skills to know what to do and who to tell if a situation would occur.

Another success of the program has been the opportunity for victims of child sexual abuse to receive counseling, thus reducing the number of victims who become promiscuous, run away, break laws, get involved in drugs/alcohol, or choose abusive relationships as adults.

In 2005, there were 135 sexual assault evaluations in Reno County concerning children who were suspected of being assaulted, and 58 of those evaluations were confirmed, resulting in both victims and offenders getting help.
